Creating Greener Cleanup and Sustainable Solutions for Urban Areas

This session will discuss programs currently being implemented in Indianapolis and Detroit that are intended to create sustainable cleanup solutions for these urban areas. You will hear about the Urban Garden Program in Indianapolis in which abandoned or under utilized land (under the management of the Land Bank) is made available to community groups or individuals for the purpose of urban gardening .  You will learn how Indianapolis has committed to the strategic use of green infrastructure (GI) in its capital improvement projects.  Also hear how Greening of Detroit, with support from the U.S. Forest Service and Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is remediating select brownfield sites with neighbors and a planting workforce who are hired and trained as part of a new Pathways Out of Poverty collaborative program.
