Livability Principles and Brownfield Projects: A Blueprint for Sustainable Communities
In June 2009, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Transportation, and Environmental Protection Agency formed the Partnership for Sustainable Communities. The partnership defined six livability principles for sustainable communities. This session explores the impact of the Sustainable Communities Partnership in supporting equitable development, increasing job access and affordable housing, and creating healthy and greener neighborhoods and buildings through on-the-ground, community-based efforts. Roundtable discussions led by community representatives discuss opportunities and challenges for incorporating the livability principles into core brownfield assessment, cleanup, and land revitalization programs. Discussion topics include how to create inclusive, deliberate, and conscientious community plans that lead to sustainable development outcomes.
