Brown to Green: The New Industry Standard

A Bright Idea: Repowering America through Renewable Energy

Since its establishment in the 1990s, EPA's "Brownfields" land revitalization program has enabled states, communities, and other stakeholders to clean up and sustainably reuse many contaminated properties. In 2008, EPA launched an innovative program to link its signature brownfields program with renewable energy production and strategic carbon reduction. Since then, the RE-Powering program has undertaken a series of activities designed to promote and encourage the success of these transformative projects.

Green Jobs and Your Community

Where are the green jobs?  Join an interactive discussion of green job opportunities and how these opportunities relate to environmental justice.  If you participate in a job training program, bring materials, issues, and questions to share with the group.

Renewable Energy at Contaminated Sites

Successful renewable energy projects on brownfield sites can be complicated, but cities have an advantage because they are proximate to users and the critical infrastructure components already exist.  With increasing energy demand and limited capacity, as well as renewable energy requirements for utility providers, the need for renewable energy development has become essential.  This panel session will provides specialized information to help implement these projects including DOE’s Solar America Communities effort, technical assistance from the National R

Green and Sustainable Remediation: Policies, Tools, and Social Impacts

This interactive town hall meeting discusses green and sustainable remediation (GSR). Issues of carbon footprint and the degree to which remediation must take social impacts into account are explored.   Experts in the field create a lively discussion coming from diverse perspectives.  The use of analytical tools such as carbon footprint calculators and issues of environmental justice is also covered.

Implementing Greener Cleanups: Below Ground, above Ground, and within the Grant Process

Greener cleanups have evolved over the past few years from a nebulous concept to a distinctive approach in remedial decision making.  This roundtable showcases and discusses the lessons learned from a series of green and sustainable redevelopment projects.  From grant funding to site reuse, participants can gain a better understanding of greener cleanups application.

Philadelphia and Camden: Two Cities, One Green Infrastructure Initiative

Camden and Philadelphia share broad historic waterfronts on the Delaware River, and both cities have created comprehensive plans to redevelop abandoned brownfield sites and transform urban landscapes to into new, sustainable communities along a revitalized riverfront.  This panel discusses how to find green infrastructure opportunities in urban settings and what different techniques are being used in these green infrastructure projects.

Re-Powering Re-visited: An Update on Efforts to Site Renewable Energy on Contaminated Land

The EPA hosts this roundtable session to provide stakeholders working on renewable energy with an update on what’s happened over the last several years both in the field and at the EPA.  It will also provide an opportunity to learn from one another, by sharing successes and challenges in siting renewable energy on contaminated land.  The EPA will provide a brief update, while developers, utilities, local governments, tribes, states, federal agencies, property owners, and financiers will describe recent triumphs and remaining roadblocks to siting renewable
